SARASOTA, Fla. -- Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry joined a reef cleanup in the Gulf of Mexico off Florida after the band canceled a concert in Tampa.
Perry and his wife joined about 85 other divers Saturday scooping up trash in the waters off Lido and Longboat keys. The couple have a second home on one of the islands.
Perry told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune that a big chunk of fiberglass, 20 feet of rope and an anchor were among the trash divers pulled out of the water.
He said the cleanup "makes people realize you can't just throw stuff off the side of the boat."
The cleanup helped raise money for the Mote Marine Laboratory's Center for Coral Research.
